When you are job seeking you will normally come into contact with a recruiter rather than the employer themselves. These can be in-house recruiters or human resources staff who are responsible for recruitment, but the majority of job adverts are posted by recruitment agencies. Whilst recruitment agencies work contractually for the companies for which they recruit staff, many agency recruiters have realised that it is more beneficial to work with candidates and treat them like people rather than a commodity or product that they are selling to their clients. One such agency will be our guests on the latest #JobAdviceSA chat.

Liyema Consulting (@liyemaConsultn) were founded in 2012 as a two person, human resource consulting company, and have grown to be a formidable force in the industry, boasting a number of local and international clients. At their foundation is the belief in the cyclical effect of growing businesses and changing lives. Their business is people and their solutions are people centered.

They value their candidates and take every opportunity to help them gain knowledge and experience. Their people are their company’s greatest asset and they pride themselves on their culture of learning, growth and inspiration. They provide quality service with the utmost integrity, reliability and honesty in all spheres of their business.

This is why they are the perfect company to tell us how jobseekers can work with recruiters to improve their chances of getting a job. Here are the questions they will be answering:

Q1. Why should people build a relationship with recruiters when they are looking for a job?

Q2. What do recruiters want to see on your CV?

Q3. What should you include in the email when you send your CV to a recruiter?

Q4. When should you expect to hear from a recruiter after you’ve sent them your CV?

Join us at 4pm on Monday 24th August to get the answers to these questions by following the hashtag #JobAdviceSA as well as the @JobAdviceSA Twitter account and our host @TimJBarry

You can answer any of the questions using A1, A2, A3, etc, or ask any other questions you might have using the hashtag #JobAdviceSA

Looking forward to chatting with you!

In a special #WomensMonth edition of #JobAdviceSA chat we are fortunate to be joined by online Career Coach Ennie Chipembere (@EnnieChipembere), who is Head of Program Quality, M&E, Learning and Knowledge for Action Aid and was International Women’s Rights Technical Advisor for an INGO covering 44 countries for 6 years.

There is still a long way to go before we can confidently say that there is equality for women in the workplace, let alone when they are considering seeking work and searching and applying for jobs. The challenges that women face are far more plentiful and difficult to overcome than those faced by men, and they have been exacerbated by the rising rate of unemployment in South Africa and further job losses resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

So in our chat Ennie and the rest of the #JobAdviceSA community are going to cover the four main areas where women must overcome challenges in order to find work and enjoy a successful career. Here are the questions:

Q1. What are the personal factors that inhibit women from seeking employment, progressing in the workplace and growing in their careers and how can they overcome them?

Q2. How can women address the challenges and limitations related to family and gender roles that they face in securing employment and succeeding in their careers?

Q3. What are the barriers and challenges that women face in society and the workplace to take advantage of opportunities and succeed at work and how can they overcome them?

Q4. What would you advise women to do to help them find jobs and succeed in the workplace, and how can employers and recruiters help them?

Join us at 4pm on Monday 17th August to get the answers to these questions by following the hashtag #JobAdviceSA as well as the @JobAdviceSA Twitter account and our host @TimJBarry

You can answer any of the questions using A1, A2, A3, etc, or ask any other questions you might have using the hashtag #JobAdviceSA.

We look forward to chatting with you then!

We all know that feeling… your phone starts ringing and your heart starts beating faster. You hesitate to answer as you’re not sure whether it will be good or bad news… You pluck up the courage just before the call goes to voicemail… or… you get a notification that you have a new message. You open your email inbox. The subject doesn’t give away what it’s about… You open it, closing your eyes before it comes up on the screen… it’s a recruiter from the company who you sent a job application to last month inviting you to an interview!

The feeling you get when you are invited to an interview is the second best feeling after being offered a job. No doubt you will have sent hundreds of applications before finally being successful, so no one can blame you for taking a moment to pat yourself on the back, right? Well don’t take too long, there’s a lot of work to be done yet!

On #JobAdviceSA chat on Monday 6th July we’re going to talk you through all the steps that you must take to prepare for an interview because, as they say, “fail to prepare, prepare to fail!”

Here are the questions:

Q1. What are the first things that you should do when you find out that you have been invited to an interview?

Q2. What do you need to research about the company?

Q3. What do you need to know about the position you are applying for?

Q4. How should you prepare yourself to attend the interview?

In the third of our series of chats during #YouthMonth, and in the week in which South Africa celebrates #YouthDay, we are very excited to welcome a special guest host to #JobAdviceSA chat.

Youth Capital is a youth-led campaign with an Action Plan to shift gears on youth unemployment in South Africa. Youth Capital’s Action Plan comes from joining the dots between research and data with the lived experiences of young South Africans and data from research, with the goal of providing a shared agenda for Government, Private Sector and South Africans to get behind to finally shift the needle on youth unemployment. In our country, every young South African could have the skills, support, and opportunity to get their first decent job… if we work to #ShiftGears together.

Here are the questions that we will be answering:

Q1. Most jobs require 2 or 3 years’ work experience but we are just out of school – how can we get around that?

Q2. What should we include or not include on our CVs and are there any CV templates that you can recommend?

Q3. Often we apply for jobs but never receive a response and don’t know why we didn’t make the cut. What is a nice way to request feedback in our applications?

Q4. Social Capital is very important when job-seeking but as young people we don’t know many people. What are some good tips to help build our social capital?

Join us to get the answers to the above questions by following the hashtags #JobAdviceSA and #ShiftGears as well as our special guest host @YouthCapitalSA resident expert @EnnieChipembere and Founder @TimJBarry

Youth Month is celebrated in South Africa in June every year, with the highlight being Youth Day on 16th June. Youth Day commemorates the Soweto Uprising of 1976 by young South Africans of colour that became the turning point in the ending of their oppression by the Apartheid Government, which eventually led to the democratic election in 1994.

The celebrations for Youth Day have since been expanded to include an entire month’s worth of events, programmes and talks which are aimed at educating, empowering and inspiring the youth of South Africa who are the future of our country. Therefore on the first day of Youth Month, which coincidentally is the first day of Level 3 of Lockdown, we will be answering the following questions to advise young South Africans on how to look for work as the economy is reopened:

Q1. What should young people be doing to prepare to look for work as the lockdown is lifted and companies begin hiring again?

Q2. Where should young people be looking for jobs whilst the coronavirus outbreak is still ongoing?

Q3. How can young people keep themselves safe when they go out to look for jobs or attend interviews?

Q4. How can young people keep themselves motivated and remain positive about finding work in the midst of an economic recession aggravated by the national lockdown?

Since the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus Covid-19, and following the start of the 21-day National Lockdown imposed by the Government, many companies have put recruitment on hold for all their open positions. However, as we discussed in our last Twitter chat, there are still companies advertising jobs and actively recruiting to fill those vacancies. If you apply for one of these jobs, and your application is shortlisted, then you might be invited to attend a video interview.

The technology that enables recruiters to interview candidates over the web via video has been around for a long time, but even now it is not commonplace for jobseekers to be asked to attend a video interview rather than meet the recruiter face-to-face. Now that most recruiters are working from home, and jobseekers are also under lockdown, video interviews are the only way that the two can ‘meet’ to discuss a job opportunity and determine whether the interviewee is the best fit for the role.

Therefore on this week’s #JobAdviceSA chat we are going to give advice on how to prepare for a video interview to improve your chances of being successful. Here are the questions:

Q1. What should be in your Video Interview Preparation Plan?

Q2. What do you need to research to help you prepare for a Video Interview?

Q3. How best should you prepare yourself for a Video Interview?

Q4. What is important for you to do during and after a Video Interview?

Join us at 4pm on Monday 6th April to get the answers to the above questions by following the hashtag #JobAdviceSA as well as the @JobAdviceSA Twitter account and our host @TimJBarry

In the first #JobAdviceSA chat of 2020 our regular expert contributor, online Career Coach Ennie Chipembere, introduced us to the concept of using a Job Search Plan to focus and guide your job search strategy.

One of the techniques that you can use to implement your job search plan is to “project manage” your job search strategy, which includes mapping and using job search spaces and opportunities, both offline and online. Here are the questions that we will be answering in order to help you do this:

Q1. What does it mean to “project manage” your job search strategy?

Q2. What are some offline spaces that employers and recruiters use to advertise jobs?

Q3. Apart from job websites and social media networks, what other online spaces can you use to find jobs?

Q4. What personal relationships and experiences can help you find jobs?

Join us at 4pm on Monday 23rd March to get the answers to the above questions by following the hashtag #JobAdviceSA as well as the @JobAdviceSA Twitter account and our host @TimJBarry
